Below you will find information on the Biology Curriculum at Preston School. The five year learning journey for Science is available in all student books, in the Science Department, and to view here.

Year 7

In Year 7, students study six hours of Science consisting of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and as such, undertake XX Study Cycles during the year.

Study Cycle 1 - Cells

Overview: This topic introduces you to the simplest unit of all living organisms – the cell.  You will look at the different parts of the cell and how they help the cell to function, before looking at specialised cells which have special features to enable them to carry out their jobs effectively. You will then consider how these cells work together in tissues, and then as organs to get a fully functioning organ system in an organism. You will discover how cells reproduce to ensure that our bodies continue on functioning to the best of their ability. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on an information sheet based around Animal and Plant Cells. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the Cells study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 2 - Body Structure and Systems

Overview: This topic introduces you to the organ systems within the human body and how the body responds to smoking, drugs and exercise. You will look at how the body moves using each muscle and the transfer of energy from food. You will also look at the lungs illustrating their function and importance. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on an information sheet based around the lungs and respiration. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the particles study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 3 - Human and Plant Reproduction

Overview: This topic introduces you to the menstrual cycle and how it prepares the female for pregnancy. You will also look at the development cycle for a fetus and how the mother is relied upon. Finally, you will look at the ways plants have adapted for seed dispersal using the resources around them. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on an information sheet based around fetal development. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the particles study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 4 - Interdependence

Overview: This topic introduces you to food chains and webs illustrating that organisms rely on others for nutrients. You will also learn that a change in one population will affect the others within the food web. Finally, you will learn the adaptations that organisms have to aid survival. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on an essay based around adaptations. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the particles study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Year 8

In Year 8, students study seven hours of Science consisting of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and as such, undertake XX Study Cycles during the year.

Study Cycle 1 - Respiration and Photosynthesis

Overview: This topic introduces you to the series of chemical reactions that occur within the cells, breaking down glucose to release energy. You will look at the idea that most living things carry out aerobic and/or anaerobic respiration; anaerobic respiration is only used when there is not enough oxygen available. You will also look at the ideas that plants and algae use energy from light with carbon dioxide and water to make glucose using photosynthesis. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on your method for a bakery around how to test the effect of increasing glucose on the rate of fermentation. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the Cells study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 2 - Health and Digestion

Overview: This topic introduces you to the importance of a balanced diet of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. You will look at why these are needed in balanced quantities and the importance for cell energy, growth and repair. You will also look at the digestive system and how this is adapted to break down large food molecules into smaller molecules and which molecules need to travel in the blood. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a letter written to a patient regarding their lifestyle and how healthy they are. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the Cells study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 3 - Inheritance and Evolution

Overview: This topic introduces you to inherited characteristics which are from genes contained within DNA and that these genes are transferred from parent to child during reproduction. You will look at the gametes, including the number of chromosomes present. Finally, you will look at natural selection, which links to the evolution of species and extinction. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on your newspaper article regarding designer babies. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the Cells study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.
