Below you will find information on the GCSE Business curriculum at Preston School. The learning journey for Business is available in all student books, on the front of the ILS block, and to view here.

 

One of the GCSE options available to students is GCSE Business. In the video below, Mrs Gray, our Business teacher provides an overview of the course. 

 

 

Year 10

During this year, you will study Component 1 - Business Activity, Marketing and People. This component will introduce you to business concepts and issues concerning the activities of a business. It explores the purpose and role of a business from first spotting an enterprising opportunity through to the growth of an established business. It also takes a close look at the role of marketing and human resources. There are 6 study cycles spread across the 3 units:  Unit 1 - Business Activity, Unit 2- Marketing and Unit 3 - People. Throughout this component you will need to consider how different contexts affect business decisions.

Study Cycle 1 - Business Enterprise & Marketing (Unit 1 & Unit 2)

Overview: During this first Study Cycle you learn about the purpose of business activity and enterprise. You will then go on to find out about the characteristics of an entrepreneur as well as the concept of risk and reward. Finally, you will be introduced to the unit of marketing. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a case study set of questions on entrepreneurs. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a market research case study task which focuses on different market research methods and qualitative and quantitative data. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of this cycle. This will provide you with an assessment grade and will take the form of a series of multiple-choice questions as well as a longer response question. Study Cycle 2 - Marketing (Unit 2)

Overview: During this Study Cycle, you will find out about market segmentations and why it is so important to target your customers. Finally, you will learn about the marketing mix (product, price, place & promotion) and will complete an assessment on how these components need to work together. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

 

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a series of questions on market segmentation based on a Tesco’s case study. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a series of multiple choice questions on the marketing mix. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of this cycle. This will provide you with an assessment grade and will take the form of a longer response question on evaluating pricing strategies. Study Cycle 3 - Business Activity Unit 1 (Part 1)

Overview: During this Study Cycle, you will find out about the different types of business ownership and the concept of limited liability. You will then learn about the different types of aims a business may have and finally you will understand the role and objectives of different stakeholders in a business. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a series of multiple-choice questions on ownership, aims and stakeholders. Study Cycle 4 - Business Activity Unit 1 (Part 2)

Overview: During this Study Cycle, you will find out about the different types of business growth and business planning. You will learn about how businesses can grow both organically and externally. You will then go on to find out about the purpose and contents of a business plan and will produce and present a plan for a business of your choice. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a series of multiple-choice questions on ownership, aims and stakeholders. Study Cycle 5 - Role of HR, Organisational Structures, Communication Recruitment & Selection

Study Cycle 6 - Motivation, Employment Law, Training & Development

Year 11

During this year, you will initially study Unit 6 – Influences on Business and Unit 7 - The interdependent nature of business before returning to previous units to recap knowledge and understanding. Throughout the year you will continue to also develop your application, analysis and evaluation skills. 

The final units (Unit 6 & 7) will introduce you to business concepts and issues concerning ethical and environmental considerations, the economic climate, globalisation and how business functional areas are all linked to each other. Throughout this unit you will need to consider how different contexts affect business decisions. Your recap lessons on previous units will involve you working through case studies from previous exams and knowledge check tests. You will be creating your own set of revision resources during this time. 

Study Cycle 1 - Influences and Interdependence (Unit 6 & Unit 7)

Overview: During this first Study Cycle you learn about how business are affected by ethical and environmental considerations, the economic climate and globalisation. You will then go on to understand how business functional areas are all linked to each other. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

 

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive a Whole Class Feedback on your responses to an extended question based on ethical and environmental considerations within a business. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a 6 mark case study question based on the effect of globalisation on Jaguar Land Rover. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of this cycle. This will provide you with an assessment grade and will take the form of past papers questions. These are based on Study Areas One, Two and Three. The assessment will be out of 25 marks and within this will be two 9 marks questions. Study Cycle 2 - Business Activity, Marketing and People (Units 1, 2 & 3 Revisited)

Overview: During this second Study Cycle you revisit Component 1 (Units 1,2 and 3). You will be developing your knowledge and understanding through knowledge check online questions and you will use past paper practice to develop your application, analysis and evaluation skills. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

 

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive a Whole Class Feedback on your responses to an extended question based on a Unit 1 - Business Activity a business. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on your responses to a series of multiple-choice questions on Component 1. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of this cycle. This will take the form of a mock exam based on all the areas of Component 1 (Business Activity, Marketing, People). The Study Cycle Summative Assessment sheet will be available to view here soon.

Study Cycle 3 - Operations, Finance and Influences on Businesses (Revision)

Overview: During this third Study Cycle you revisit Component 2 (Units 4,5 and 6). You will be developing your knowledge and understanding through knowledge check online questions and you will use past paper practice to develop your application, analysis and evaluation skills. Study Cycle 4 - Component 1 & 2 Revision Programme

Overview: In your final study cycle you will have the opportunity to create your own revision materials as well as practice exam questions, using the past paper & model answers resources in Google Classrooms. You will also undertake your formal mock exam.
