One of the GCSE options available to students is BTEC Enterprise. In the video below, Mrs Gray, our Business teacher provides an overview of the course. 

 

 

Year 10

During this year, you will study Component 1: Exploring Enterprises and Component 2: Planning and Pitching a Micro Enterprise.  In Component 1, you will explore different enterprises to develop your knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of enterprises and the skills needed by entrepreneurs to be successful.  You explore how enterprises use market research to find out about their customer needs and competitor behaviour and how internal and external factors may affect enterprises.  In Component 2, you will generate two realistic ideas for a micro-enterprise and choose one of these to plan within a budget. You will present your business plan and review the delivery of your presentation to make recommendations for improvements.

Study Cycle 1 - How and why enterprises and entrepreneurs are successful (LOA)

Overview: This topic introduces you to entrepreneurship and the reasons why entrepreneurs start their own business.  You will learn about the skills and characteristics of an entrepreneur and meet with local businesses. You will then learn about the different types ownership from small micro businesses to medium sized limited companies.  Finally, you will explore the aims of different organisations and the impact of success and failure. From this, you will complete a series of multiple choice / short answer questions for your assessment. The Study Cycle Overview sheet is available in all student books and to view here.

 

Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a case study on entrepreneurship. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a knowledge check test around types of SMEs. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the ‘how and why enterprises and entrepreneurs are successful’ study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. Study Cycle 2 - Understanding customer needs and competitor behaviour through market research (LOB)

Overview: This topic will explore the market research methods used by enterprises and their importance in understanding customer needs and competitive behaviour.  You will learn about primary and secondary research and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.  You will learn about all the different methods employed by businesses and complete your very own market research based on a biscuit project.  At the end of this Study Cycle, you will complete a series of multiple choice / short answer questions for your assessment. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a knowledge check test on market research. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a case study around understanding competitor behaviour. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the ‘understand customer needs and competitor behaviour through market research’ study area. This will provide you with an assessment grade. Study Cycle 3 - Understanding how the outcomes of situational analyses may affect enterprises (LOC)

Overview: This topic will explore internal and external factors for use in a PEST and SWOT analysis. You will research how these factors affect enterprises, before conducting your own research into a local enterprise and completing a PEST and a SWOT analysis. At the end of this Study Cycle, you will complete a written assignment, in preparation for your final assessment in April. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a knowledge check test on SWOT analysis. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a case study focusing PEST analysis. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the study area. The summative assessment will be in the form a mock assignment, in preparation for your final assessment in April. Study Cycle 4 - Component 1 Pearson Set Assignment

Overview: This topic will explore the activities, aims and objectives of a selected enterprise. You will research the skills and characteristics of the entrepreneur and the different types of market research used by the business. Finally, you will produce a PEST and SWOT analysis. At the end of this Study Cycle, you will submit your written assignment, which is worth 30% of your final grade. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on the notes you produce in preparation for your assignment. Your summative assessment for this unit will be your finished assignment.  This will be marked by your teacher and will be moderated by an examiner. Year 11

During this year, you will complete Component 3: Promotion and Finance for Enterprise. You will explore how marketing is used by enterprise and the factors that influence how enterprises identify and target their market. You will complete financial documents and statements and explore how to use them to monitor and improve the performance of an enterprise in order to make decisions and recommend strategies for success. You will then finish studying Component 2: Planning and Pitching a Micro Enterprise. For the final part of this unit, you will produce a finance plan for your business and will then present your idea in a Dragons Den style presentation.

Study Cycle 1 - Promotion for Enterprise (LOA)

Overview: During this first Study Cycle you will explore how promotion is used by enterprises and the factors that influence how enterprises identify and target their market.  You will study the following topics: the promotional mix, market segmentation, types of market and factors affecting choice of promotion.  Your assessment will be based on a series of past paper questions, to test your knowledge and understanding, as well as exam technique. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on Marketing section of your business plan. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a promotion knowledge check test. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the ‘Promotion for Enterprise’ study area. This will be a series of past paper exam questions and it will provide you with an assessment grade. Study Cycle 2 - Finance for Enterprise (LOB)

Overview: During this Study Cycle you will also learn about costs, revenues and profits. You will learn about the flow of documents used in the ordering process, as well as the different sources of finance available to business to fund growth and expansion. Your assessment will be based on a series of past paper questions, to test your knowledge and understanding, as well as exam technique. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on which will be an online multiple-choice assessment. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a past paper question based on statements of comprehensive income. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the ‘Finance for enterprise’ study area. This will be a series of past paper exam questions and it will provide you with an assessment grade. Study Cycle 3 - Financial Planning and Forecasting (LOC)

Overview: This topic will explore the statement of financial position, learning about its purpose and how to complete the document. You will learn how to complete a cash flow forecasts, and investigate the effects of positive and negative cash flow on an enterprise. You will then learn why enterprises may plan different sources of finance for different purposes or at different stages and the relevance of each source. At the end of this Study Cycle, you will complete a series of multiple choice and exam style questions for your assessment. You will receive another Whole Class Feedback on a case study around understanding Sources of finance. You will undertake a summative assessment at the end of the study area. Study Cycle 4 - Planning and Pitching an Enterprise

Overview: This topic will explore business planning and presentations. You will learn how to complete all the sections of the business plan including finance, marketing, production and market research. You will then produce your own business plan for a micro enterprise. You will learn about public speaking and will produce and present a business pitch. At the end of this Study Cycle, you will submit your final business plan and presentation which will be marked and moderated by the exam board. Assessment Opportunities: You will receive Whole Class Feedback on a knowledge check test on business plans and preparing for a business pitch. The summative assessment for this unit will be your finished piece of coursework. This is worth 30% of your final grade.
